Art both influences and reflects culture, «Salute!» Join us for our bimonthly themed cocktail to bring artists and new audiences together. Our happy hour is curated to match our three historic galleries, which are dedicated to showing more than 200 contemporary artists annually. This Culture Hour celebrates artists who are activists and parents producing work about family structures. We'll have lemonade for the kiddos and a cocktail for adults.
How can we change the perception that having kids is career impediment? Also, how can we relate to the intriguing worlds of small people and how they see the world in their formative years? Dual Roles captures the South Florida artist community, where artists bring their kids to openings, run spaces, and start initiatives. Summer is also a hectic time for booking field trips at most major cultural institutions when school lets out. In preparing for a family-friendly exhibition, we turn to artist parents to discuss the layers of their lives as cultural producers. Andrew Simonet recently pointed out in a Creative Capital online course that, “We live in a culture that’s not very good at supporting artists and we also live in a culture that’s not very good at supporting parents.” This duality he describes shapes the livelihoods of artists, forcing them to fracture themselves and make sacrifices. Dual Roles focuses on artists who are communal in their process and bring family into the fold of their individual and collective practices. We would like to thank Francie Bishop Good, David Horvitz, and Sarah Michelle Rupert for generously lending many works from the Girls' Club Collection and for their continued support of our organization.
