«Operation Pedro Pan: The Cuban Children's Exodus,» a documentary film illustrating the story of more than 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children that left their homeland from 1960 -1962, in the largest recorded child refugee exodus in the Western Hemisphere.
A production of OPPG Historic Committee in collaboration with Smithsonian affiliate HistoryMiami Museum, this documentary, which runs for 90 minutes, is based on research undertaken by our Historic Committee for the HistoryMiami/OPPG's 2015-2016 exhibit of the same name. The exhibit was the recipient of the American Association for State and Local History's Award of Merit in 2016. The documentary builds upon but goes beyond elements of the exhibit and consisits of 22 interviews with former Pedro Pans, Pedro Pan mothers, caretakers and a historian. The interviews cover life in Cuba before 1959, the drastic changes brought about by the Revolution, their unaccompanied exodus from the Island, arrival and adaptation to life in the US. They conclude with their reflections of their lives some 55 years later.
