Nerd Nite is a monthly event during which several folks give fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along.
It's like the Discovery Channel… with beer!
This month's speakers and topics:
1) The Relationship Between Modern European Geopolitics and the Eurovision Song Contest
by Gabriel Osuna
A presentation that analyzes the most seemingly pointless and petty actions at the contest and explains the reasoning and history behind it. A few major topics will be lightly covered, such as the Franco dictatorship in Spain, the Azeri-Armenian conflict, the Soviet Union’s reaction to the song contest, Israel’s participation, the break-up of Yugoslavia, and Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The presentation will tie in these topics to their respective effects on the contest in the relevant time periods.
Gabriel Osuna is a Miami native that somehow became obsessed with the world’s most fabulous and probably unnecessary song contest. A super fan since 2007 when he was just 11 years old, he has gone back into the 6+ decades of the competition’s history in his spare time to piece together the happenings at each Eurovision and the stories behind them.

2) «Getting 2 Zero” Miami: Making HIV History!
by Sarah Kenneally and Karen Iglesias
“Getting 2 Zero” Miami is about the history of having the worst HIV epidemic in the country to showing a future where new infections are rare and those living with the disease have normal lifespans with few complications. This presentation will highlight how the community is pulling together to reduce new HIV infections, maximize the availability of life-saving, transmission-interrupting treatment for HIV, and improve health disparities in our local area.
Sarah Kenneally and Karen Iglesias are Public Health advocates working for the Florida Department of Health in the STD/HIV Prevention and Control Program. Together, they work on HIV prevention and outreach, getting people to know their HIV status, teaching on tools to protect yourself, and working on strategies and policies to help improve the health outcomes of Miamians.

by Miss Toto
In this presentation, Miss Toto will cover a general HERstory of drag, drag culture and customs, and a cost analysis of drag. You will leave this presentation with a broad understanding of drag, gender expression, and how to properly carry yourself as an audience member at a drag show.
Per the Miami New Times, Miss Toto is „Miami's undisputed party queen.“ Hailing from rural Western Maryland, this queen has quickly established herself as an integral part of Miami's queer scene.
