Join History Fort Lauderdale and Broward's Mid Century Modern community in an architectural tour highlighting the historic mid century modern architecture of our city, highlighting the unique works of Charles McKirahan.
McKirahan (1919 -1964) was born in Illinois and moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1947 at the age of 28. He was one of the most prolific and creative of the mid-Century modernists local architects. He opened an office here in 1953.
Some of his most famous designs include the Manhattan Tower, the Sea Chateau and Birch Tower complex in Birch Estates. Other landmark sites include the Mai Kai on North Federal Highway and his work in Fort Lauderdale’s Harbor Inlet Neighborhood including the handsome Bay Harbor Club and the Contintental. McKirahan’s brilliant career spanned only 11 years (1953-1964). He died tragically in an automobile accident at the age of 45.
This tour will explore a number of McKirahan designed landmarks including the historic Mai Kai Restaurant and is conducted by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society in celebration of the 51st anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, in collaboration with BroCoMo, which aims to be a forum for lovers of Broward County's defining legacy of Mid-century Modern architecture.
The tour begins and ends at the Mai Kai Restaurant located at 3599 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308.
